A New Year, A New Look, and Other Exciting Happenings

After an eventful year and lots of hard work, Emilliner is excited to introduce a new look and line for 2011 inspired by my own wedding this past September. Deciding what headpiece to wear was more difficult than finding a dress. I choose a hint of color with blush silk roses and a delicate spray of floating feathers to compliment my cage veil. The bridesmaids also donned fascinators of beautiful white feathers and of course the flower girls were too sweet with their feather starbursts.

A huge thanks to Maya Laurent Photography, Kat Sterrett for the amazing makeup and Loni Wilson for my beautiful hairstyle.

Soft feathers, delicate silk, a touch of sparkle- all textures that set the mood for this latest collection. Combining a nod to vintage millinery and graphic silhouettes, my hope is to offer the modern bride a stylish alternative to the traditional tulle and tiara. The feminine and one-of-a-kind fascinators create a gorgeous focal point for the bride wishing to go veil-less. Handcrafted from the highest quality materials, Emilliner headpieces can add a touch of color and whimsy to the bridal ensemble.

Love it! Just got the latest scoop on the newest millinery intern- none other than Ms. Gaga herself! According to the Huffington Post and Shiny Style Lady Gaga is interested in making her own fantastic headwear and learning from the master (and my old mentor) Philip Treacy. She'll surely get the best education in town but wait till she learns about the hours! The Post says she'll be making coffee but I can report that he likes tea- extra hot. I would love to return for a day to see what happens, and I can't wait to see what they come up with.

Also adore this Philip quote in the Guardian :

At lease she (Lady G) follows the golden rule- keeping the hat on. "You wouldn't take your underwear off at an event would you?" he said. "You miss the whole point if you take it off"

Waterproof Fascinator- My Day at the Derby

At long last my Derby update! Despite the rainy weather we had a jolly time thanks to good company and a little Kentucky bourbon. As it became clear that the weather wasn't going to cooperate I let go of my visions of the grand feather bedecked sinamay creation and opt for a waterproof fascinator. The blue crinoline burst with roses was the perfect compliment to my yellow poncho and rain boots. Although I didn't see as many cool hats as I had expected, the hat wearing spirit was still alive (somewhere in all that mud) and I have high hopes for next year.

So you all know by now how much I love felt. Especially when its used in a new and interesting way. I adore this etsy seller's fresh take on my favorite material. On this grey day MadameVu's vibrant colors and graphic textures are certainly bringing me some cheer. Her intricate felt earrings are reminiscent of beach balls or chinese lanterns hanging in the trees on a summer evening. They certainly have put me in the mood for some sunshine and fun. I haven't been in the blogging mood as of late. The winter blues have hit hard and I've been procrastinating on this next post. I'm just plain sad. One of my favorite designers, Alexander McQueen has passed away. His fashion was always fresh and he knew how to use a hat to complete a look. During my study abroad in college I was first introduced to McQueen through a fabulous photo by David LaChapelle . In it Alexander poses with his friend and supporter Isabella Blow. I can't believe it, but they are now both gone.

“I’m sad for him,” said the milliner Philip Treacy, a friend of McQueen’s for the last 20 years. “Creativity is a very fragile thing, and Lee was very fragile. He was a fragile person with a front of whatever you want to call it. It’s not easy being Mr. McQueen. We’re all human. His mum had just died. And his mum was a great supporter of his talent. I don’t really know what happened.”

I was fortunate enough to work at Philip Treacy's on the hats for McQueen's Fall '08 line. I will cherish my memories of the hats and his work.

Saturday was fun with the ladies from Love, Lingerie, Life! Connecting with such talented locals is truly inspiring. I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely photographer Stacy Able, who captured some great shots of the day.

Stacy does many styles of photography and I'm a fan of her retro/pinup work. Gotta love the hat!

It takes a talented lady to get great pet portraits and her dog photos will make your heart melt!

Today's featured etsy seller is a treasure trove of millinery goodies. Mary, Not Martha offers a wonderful selection of vintage trims, ribbons, leaves and flowers. One of my biggest challenges as a milliner is finding quality supplies. I either have to spend a fortune in sourcing fine materials from Europe or become creative in adapting non-traditional materials. An easy and fun solution is to go vintage. I love using old millinery trim in new ways, adding a touch of classic to modern shapes. Vintage supplies are great to use but are also important tools in maintaining the art of production. See how the trims are made and try to reproduce them. Mary, Not Martha has some lovely examples.

I am especially enchanted by the selection of vintage leaves and flowers. The prices are extremely reasonable. If you're looking for something special for your next millinery/craft project visit her etsy store!

INDIEana Handicraft Exchange folks Amanda and Neil Taflinger are up for a grant to open Homespun, a modern handmade goods store on the east side of Indy. Along with showcasing local arts and crafts, the space would serve as a classroom, studio and meeting place. Homespun's goals: To help revive Indianapolis' east side, serve as a hub of Indiana's artisan community, to offer low-cost arts education to our community, and help working artists support themselves. Etsy Spotlight: Nelle handmade

Today's Etsy spotlight features a fabulous accessories designer from Minneapolis. Designer Laura Nelli first caught my eye with her wonderful use of a traditional millinery material- petersham ribbon.

More commonly known as grosgrain ribbon (the ribbon with the tiny ribs) millinery petersham differs from the stuff found at your local craft store because of its unbound scalloped edge. This is helpful in hat making as the ribbon can be curved (with steam and a hot iron) to lie flat against the crown of the hat.

Petersham is the base material for a beautiful piece in Laura's luxury handbag line Nelle. NYC was truly a blast. Got to see a lot, do a lot and eat a lot. More fun details to come later this week. The trip had dual purpose.... we got to visit the city but we also brought the city home with us. Our good friend Chris Tracy (living in Brooklyn) is an amazing artist and will be opening a gallery show this Friday at the Mt. Comfort gallery in Fountain Square. His photographs and art from found objects give me a sense of nostalgia and a desire for the city. I've only seen a small preview but it's sure to be great. Check out some of his work here.

It feels good to sit down at my computer after a nice week long vacation. After much eating, traveling, and merry making today is back to the schedule (blogging, emailing, yoga, cleaning). It was a wonderful year for hand-made gifts, and I'm proud to share the latest emilliner design- a men's felt fedora (soon to be on etsy). My first men's hat in over a year went to my wonderful dad who is one of my biggest supporters. Nathan also received one along with a custom pillow (made from a great tee-shirt from isotope on etsy).

On the receiving end, I was lucky to get three very special homemade gifts. My father (who went to design school in Chicago) drew a very sweet picture of our new home.

Nathan (inspired I think by my snow blog) created a lovely print commemorating our Chicago days.

My mother, one of my earliest crafty teachers, made me two sets of winter hats and mittens. Check out the especially warm felted mittens and vintage inspired knit kerchief. She's so talented!

Nathan and I have been wondering what our special Christmas tradition will be and I think we've come up with a good one.

Today's fantastic etsy seller dadaya is sure to bring a bit of cheer into your life. With her line tiny toadstool she magically combines four of my loves: hats, felt, embroidery and color! Her tiny berets are pieces of art- soft and organic with wonderful patterns and texture. She also offers fabulous mittens and has an online vintage clothing store. I love the way that she styles her photos, and one can feel the joy of creative fashion in her shots. I just can't say enough about her work so please check it out for yourself!

Milliner Monday: Bes-Ben

Today's milliner duo holds a special place in my heart. A couple of years back I stumbled upon millinery gold at the Chicago History Museum. On display was a little hat topped with miniature pillows. It was love at first sight.

Dubbed “Chicago's Mad Hatter” Benjamin Green-Field paired with his sister Bess to create the millinery label Bes-Ben and opened a store in 1919. Bes-Ben's whimsical creations were worn by the wealthy and famous including such ladies as Lucille Ball, Elizabeth Taylor and Marlene Dietrich. The hats would often feature multiple “miniatures” of things including dogs, owls, cigarettes, palm trees and lobsters to name a few. He created a hat topped with real razor blades for Heda Hopper to wear to the film premiere of “The Razor's Edge.” In deference to WWII and rationing, hats were created from kitchen utensils, napkin rings and sponges.

The exclusive hats were priced from $37- $1000 and sold well even during the depression. Famously every summer Bes-Ben would clean house of old inventory with a special $5 sale. Starting at 2am Mr. Green-Field would toss the sale hats out to a waiting crowd. In the 1960s demand for the hats declined, but today they remain highly collectible. In recent times one Bes-Ben hat sold to a collector for over $18,000.

I was delighted to find that my very own Indianapolis is home to many special Bes-Ben pieces. The Indianapolis Museum or Art houses the following treasures:

"dogs" hat

"swans" hat

and one of my personal favorites: "corn" hat

Bes-Ben hats are sure to put a smile on my face and remind me why I love hats. I hope you love them too!

Etsy Spotlight: spinthread

Today's Etsy Spotlight is one of my favorite sellers. Since my first cross-stitch lesson as a child, I've always loved to embroider. It runs in the family, and my grandmother's house always had those pictures or pillows of fruit and flowers made from heavy wool stitches. The technical term is "crewel work"- to create a slightly raised stitched design using wool thread or yarn. Spinthread's collection Maranon is evocative of this traditional technique but her perspective is so fresh and modern. The geometric patterns of her designs are graphic and clean yet soft from the cotton thread. They invite you to run your fingers over the surface. The colors are fantastic, and I especially enjoy the process photos of the work on flickr.

She also makes a mean pom pom and has a few headpieces as well.

While I can't complain about its effect on the heating bill, this warmer December weather has left me feeling a little snow deprived. Milliner Monday: Its all about the shoe

Today's Milliner Monday pick is a short one. Where has the day gone!? I promise more coverage on this wonderful milliner in future posts. I was lucky enough to come across a wonderful post featuring an Elsa Schiaparelli hat (check out Iggy. Frankie&Cab).

“In difficult times fashion is always outrageous.”- Elsa Schiaparelli

Elsa Schiaparelli was an Italian fashion designer prominent between the World Wars. Heavily influenced by the Surrealists, she collaborated with Salvador Dali and Alberto Giacometti.

In her Fall/Winter Collection 1937-38 Elsa created the famous “shoe hat”. In the shape of a woman's high heel, the hat was worn by many stylish women including Gala Dali. A much talked about piece, it has inspired many a hat in the same vein.

Even 2009 welcomed hats that hearkened back to Elsa. Take a look at Isaac Mizrahi's purse hats.

Elle Italy also showcased a shoe hat in a spread shot by Karl Lagerfeld featuring Iekeliene Stange.

Gotta love a milliner that still inspires.

Etsy Spotlight: twoknit

Today's Etsy Spotlight follows my knitting preoccupation. While venturing away from the trusty scarves into patterned territory, I'm appreciating the time and talent it takes to make all those pretty pieces I see everyday on Etsy.

And there is none more talented than to seller twoknit. I first fell in love with the Romantic Crochet Cuffs. With a slight nod to victorian aesthetics, the knit spats and fingerless gloves are lovely and feminine. The knit hats are sweet and look warm as well.

What I also really love about this shop is the family crafting tradition. The shop was opened by Eve Neuhart and her grandmother Martha Villa. Originally from Argentina, Martha began knitting at an early age. She began to knit professionally in the 1960s, moved to the United States and worked for a boutique in Beverly Hills. There she created the crochet hats for Ali MacGraw in Love Story and even taught Natalie Wood to crochet baby clothes

Eve was an early knitter as well, her first projects being knit animals. Now at sixteen (she's still in highschool) Eve and Martha sell their lovely wares on Etsy. Eve's mom Roxana started with Etsy first with her store Illuminated Perfume. What a talented family! Milliner Monday: Dache did it from bed!

Milliner Monday highlights the famous Lilly Dache. This special lady will need more than one post, but today I'm inspired by one of the wild and over-the-top stories about her millinery lifestyle.

I could give you her bio break-down: Born in France (of course), immigrated to New York in the 1920s, millinery sales clerk at Macy's 1924, opened her own millinery shop, conquered the world of hats etc. (See bio for more complete info)

What most delights me about this lady is the wonderful aura of glamour, luxe lifestyle, and millinery confidence that Dache gives us through her book "Talking Through My Hats". In it we see life through Lilly's eyes- and she isn't shy:

"I like beautiful shoes in gay colors, with thick platforms and high heels. I like splashy jewellery that clinks when I walk, and I like my earrings big. I am... Lilly Dache, milliner de luxe."

On this cold and snowy winter morning I couldn't help but think about taking a clue from how Lilly did business. Never the early riser Dache would conduct her morning business from bed (think 18th century madames and their levees). She would buy supplies, dictate letters, delegate and design, all while swathed in her leopard-skin rug. The legend says that some mornings even a bubble bath didn't get in the way of the millinery schedule. Yep, that's the life of a "milliner de luxe". Until I get there I'll settle for my cozy chair by the fire, comfy afghan and laptop. Besides there are too many pins involved to make hats in bed.

But hold on, there is so much more Lilly to come! Look for part 2 somewhere around New Year's when I'll talk about Lilly's time capsule and penchant for toads!

Hat Inspiration Pic of the Day: Pom Time

Its always the moment I dread come this time of year. It's December 3rd, and once again I'm late at brainstorming crafty gift ideas for the family and friends. The trouble is I always want to make a neat/practical gift and never allow myself enough time to complete the project. Since my aunt Helen taught me to knit at age 10, I've relied on this good old skill for many an occasion. I think it's the perfect year to revisit the craft- I'm envisioning cozy nights by the fire, needles clicking.

I'm on the internet looking for simple, quick knits but am enjoying finding all of the great fashion pics with the patterns. I've gotta say this is one of my favorites. I think its the guy's smile- he's proud of his hat. What do you think, can I get my fiance to go for one of these? I think they're too good to be true- as long as he wears the turtleneck!

Etsy Spotlight of the week is one of my favorite sellers : Hanami Gallery. Translated as "view flowers", Hanami's creations are little works of folded art. Tsumami Kanzashi is the Japanese art of hair decorations created by pinching pieces of silk into 3D shape.

Hair oragami! Definitely a beautiful option for a graphic bridal headpiece. I just love her colors and the intricacy of the petals. Also be sure to check out her hand spun, hand dyed yarns. This is one crafty lady!

Milliner Monday: Gehry joins the ranks

This news story is a few weeks old, but I thought it would be the perfect way to introduce my new post feature "Milliner Monday". Each week I will spread the word about a new/exciting/beloved fellow hatter.

I firmly believe that anyone can make a hat. I often find that the most inspired millinery creations are born of a multi-discinplinary approach to design and technique. I find especially intriquing/relevant the connection between architecture and millinery. The first challenge of millinery is to make something that will stay in place on the head. It truly takes an engineering mind to meld imaginative design with the practical function of headwear. I've often wondered what kind of a hat an architect would design and last week I found out.

Famed architect Frank Gehry joined the millinery ranks with his hat designed for Lady Gaga. Pairing with Prada, Gehry created the hat to be worn at the MOCA 30th anniversary gala.

In his own words Gehry explains his hat challenges:

"Since I've never designed a hat before, I was afraid she wouldn't be able to walk." he said. "I did have an idea that i volved people with sticks holding it up, walking behind her. I didn't know how far I could go with this thing."

I find it very interesting that even a designer with such skills as Gehry's still finds the head a difficult canvas. Lady Gaga put her own spin on the hat to help with its wearability. According to one story online she folded the hat in on itself. Experience in wearing a hat is key to the process of making a successful hat. Clearly Lady Gaga has worn enough hats to know what works, and I was delighted to see the collaboration that went in to the creation of a unique piece. On its own the hat isn't a favorite, but I think the ensemble works well and was most likely a stunning part of the Francesco Vezzoli show.

The hat is up for auction (along with other costume pieces) through December 20th and is valued at $30,000.

Love it or hate it, its another instance of a modern millinery success and I can't wait to see more hat collaborations!

There is nothing better than the spontaneous road trip. The gods were smiling at me yesterday when two friends rang me to suggest an impromptu trip to Louisville to see a show. To my delight AA Bondy was opening for one of my all time favorites Elvis Perkins in Dearland.

The show was at a bar called Zanzabar, and it couldn't have been a better destination. A little off the beaten path, Zanzabar's black and white tiled exterior boldly displays a graphic "Z" and welcomes music lovers into a cozy, slightly retro interior. A mini restraunt offered yummy dinner special of roasted winter veggies and salmon-very tempting. At the back was the up close and personal stage. The place was brimming with a variety of folks enjoying microbrews and whiskeys alike. I know I'm diverging from hat land for this blog but my night wasn't without millinery spotings. Many a fedora and even the occasional porkpie were present.

Down to brass tacks- the shows were great. So full of energy in such a close knit atmosphere. I am always struck by the amazing song writing of Elvis Perkins. The eloquent lyrics were only heightened by the full sounds of the band playing a wide range of instruments. My favorite was the bass drummer who spilled out into the crowd. In fact AA Bondy and the Woes (pre pre band) joined in on the Dearland fun for an awesome singalong.

Ahhhh.... its so good to get that breath of fresh air from a trip outside daily routine. That and live music is always an important reminder to the good stuff in life. Purchased an AA Bondy CD which will be playing alongside Elvis during my next hat making session. It doesn't get better than this!

Feeling the Vintage Vibe

Between the chilly temps and my move to the new house, I've had cause to stop and really evaluate which direction my wardrobe is taking. I must admit, even though I lived for over one year in the fashion capitol of London, my wardrobe is looking a little tired. Comfort has been the priority, and I have a secret addiction to jersey knits and leggings. Black is the predominant color, mostly for ease of styling and hey, shouldn't I look the part of a designer (Edith Head anyone?)

I remember back in the day I used to collect and wear the most beautiful vintage pieces. 50's circle skirts with vivid prints were a particular passion. Well, I think I'm ready to get back into the mix. Maybe not with the same energy of my early 20's or college day thrift store habits. I have been delighted to find access to some great vintage stores through good old Etsy. Now that I've taken the time to look, I see just how many there are and how easy it is to shop. I'm giving a shout to to a couple of my new finds and always on the look out for more.

“The world is full of really great vintage hats because there used to be so many milliners. For every little town there were three or four independent craftsmen. Now the few that are left tend to be the only names people know,” Clark said.

Brrrrr I'm feeling the winter chill already in this first week of November! Days are getting shorter, the beautiful autumn leaves are fallin' fast, and I'm digging in my closet for my favorite knit hat and scarf. While I have my good old favorites I'm always on the lookout for my new "won't leave the house without it" winter hat. This designer has been on my radar for awhile, but now with the season change I think I'm gonna save up my pennies for one of her amazing knit creations. Etsy seller Yokoo from Atlanta creates these fabulous knit hats and scarves- sculptures really. They are so full of body and life while being cozy and inviting. Love her styling too. Yes, I love to read (guiltily) a certain men's style magazine. They are always assured to feature another trendy clothing designer based in Brooklyn (yawn). I was delightfully surprised to come across this company after my own heart. Still Life's flagship store is located in the Lower East Side and is the vision of creative director/owner Frenel Morris. Not only does this company offer an interesting range of sharp men's hats- they are made in the USA! Still Life had its very own millinery factory in none other than Red Hook Brooklyn. I'll admit I'm jealous. For now I'm my own one woman factory, and I would like to give props to this fellow milliner. Check 'em out!

A big congrats and thanks to all the folks involved with this year's Midwest Fashion Week! I was proud to be a part of the events and pleased to meet so many wonderful locals. It was great to work with a team with stylists, photographers, and fellow designers to create a truly wonderful showcase of Indianapolis fashion.

Sneak Peak Fashion Show

Emilliner on the TV! Take a sneak peak of MWFW's Saturday Runway Show. A local station featured a mini-show on the morning news. It was so nice to work once again with the fabulous make-up artist KaraMia. Hats were paired with great looks from Berny Martin and Lesley Jane Hunt of z'chic boutique in Zionsville. It was such a pleasure to meet Lesley and I can't wait to check out her store!

Midwest Fashion Week

Midwest Fashion Week is in full swing! Congrats to the talented fashion students at the Art Institute of Indianapolis. The Thursday night show was a success and I was pleased to see a few toppers from the hat making workshop that I held last month.

Today's happening at the Arts Garden with the MWFW trunk show and I'm pleased to have a booth next to Catherine Fritsch. Her excellently crafted pieces have a luxurious touch and great attention to detail. I will definitely be keeping my eye on her upcoming lingerie line Sweet Revenge. Valentines Day anyone?

I'm also loving my fellow vendor Biana Sharp ofPax4U. Her amazing "hip bags" and

truly that- super chic bag that can be worn at the hip. Discard those old 80's fanny packs today and try one of her ergonomic, earth-friendly designs.

Well I've hit the jackpot. Since moving to Indianapolis the community has welcomed my new business with open arms, but my biggest supporter happens to be the good folks at Lodge Design. (Oh and their logo happens to be a steak, yum!)

My talented fiance is lucky to work this super creative design firm located in Irvington. I am always amazed at what these guys produce and reminded once again of all great art happening right here in the Midwest. Check out their website and see what I mean!

Hats an Anthology by Stephen Jones

So I've re-fallen in love with the Indianapolis Public Library once again. Bless them they've gone and gotten the best hat book out there in years! Tragically unable to cross the pond for London's V&A Museum exhibition sigh.... I have the next best thing, book in hand! If you want to see what a hat should be check out "Hats an Anthology by Stephen Jones". He was the first to bring back the hat as a fashionable piece of art in the 1980s and continues to innovate today. Along with Philip Treacy, Stephen is the king of hats in my book. "Hats an Anthology" is a delightful read with lots of great photos, inspiration and hat history. Along with this killer hat quote from John Galliano:

You shouldn't ask 'why do you wear a hat?' What you really should be asking is 'why are you not?' I can't imagine leaving the house without a hat. How can a look be complete without a hat? From a cap to a full-on fascinator, the hat is the accent the exclamation mark, the finishing note that punctuates the whole look.

I totally agree! Be sure to check it out (once I've finally decided to stop renewing)

Hat Talk

Listening to NPR in the car on the way to the coffee shop this Sunday morning, I was given a moment of inspiration. Click and Clack muse on on the qualities of various headlights. While I find it all mildly amusing wouldn't it be exciting to have a resource for fashion, better yet hats? Fedora vs. Trilby. Sinamay vs. Straw. Thrilling. I must admit to the bias of being a milliner by trade, but I still think its worth a go. We have a "Car Talk" why not a "Hat Talk"?

Although I don't have radio air time at my disposal isn't a blog better yet. New to the blogging world I can't promise consistency but will do my best to provide hat information, resources, and inspiration to the hat fashion community. And it's not your grandmother's hat anymore. Gone are the conventions of crown and brim. No more stuffy shapes or tacky trim. Think fashion forward, youthful and easy to wear. Breaking news of the trendy feather "fascinator" and the mini-cocktail perch.
